Body and Soul in Harmony: Yoga for Every Stage of Motherhood

A woman's body is incredible and undergoes transformations over the years, not only physical but also mental and even spiritual. During the stages of motherhood, from before conceiving to postpartum, these changes can be much more noticeable or perhaps drastic, and for that reason it is easy to identify all the changes and specific issues that arise for each mother during pregnancy and the stages before and after it.

A woman's body requires special attention and care at all times, and even more importantly during this stage. It has been proven that the practice of yoga has a high impact on the transformation of women in a positive way during this period.

Yoga has a holistic and calming approach, which is why it is essential to practice something that is not harmful to health and that also helps relieve stress, which can be one of the most harmful elements for both mother and baby.

Yoga helps maintain flexibility and body strength, especially in key areas such as the pelvis, back, and abdomen, which are essential to face weight gain and the expansion of the uterus. Additionally, it relieves common pains such as back, hip, and leg pain, and reduces muscle tension through specific postures. Yoga also decreases stress and anxiety through conscious breathing and meditation. It improves blood circulation, which helps prevent swelling and promotes the baby’s health. Finally, it prepares the body for childbirth by strengthening the pelvic floor and facilitating postural alignment, which can contribute to a smoother and less painful labor.

Each stage of pregnancy corresponds to a different way of practicing yoga. That is, yoga postures in the first trimester of pregnancy should be simple and relaxed. The lack of energy can make it difficult to perform some asanas, so they are adapted to more passive ones. Additionally, at this moment of pregnancy, more emphasis is placed on meditation and internal state.

Some recommended postures during the first trimester are: seated tailor pose, windmill, and pigeon.

During the second trimester of pregnancy, the focus should be more on relieving tension in the lower back, which becomes overloaded during this period. Postures where the woman remains lying down are avoided, since the arteries may be compressed by the weight of the fetus, making blood flow more difficult.

Some recommended postures during the second trimester are: cat pose or circular movements of the pelvic area.

Finally, in the third trimester of pregnancy the postures are aimed at preparing for the moment of childbirth.

Some recommended postures during the 3rd and final trimester are: goddess pose or warrior pose.

Yoga is a practice that, if continued even after pregnancy, will have great benefits such as improving digestion, enhancing blood circulation, providing flexibility to muscles and joints, strengthening the pelvic floor muscles, and helping to relax and manage stressful situations.

As with everything during motherhood, precautions must always be taken, and it is true that it should always be practiced under supervision and/or accompanied by someone.

Postures that require a lot of balance should not be performed to avoid falls. In addition, the duration of the postures should be shortened to prevent fatigue.

Special care must be taken with stretching. Pregnant women produce more relaxin (a hormone that increases flexibility), so they should not stretch more than necessary. Avoid postures where the uterus or the fetus is compressed. The spine should remain upright and the chest lifted so the fetus has enough space to move.

Likewise, nowadays there are many centers and places where there are yoga classes especially for pregnant women. Experts can correct postures and also answer questions about the exercises so that there is no risk.

Yoga in motherhood is much more than a physical practice; it is a tool that fosters connection with one’s own body, mind, and the baby. Throughout the different stages of pregnancy and postpartum, yoga can be a powerful ally to improve flexibility, strength, emotional well-being, and preparation for childbirth. In addition, yoga promotes a more conscious and balanced experience during motherhood, allowing mothers to live this transformative process with calm, peace, and deep connection.
